Equality impact assessments help ensure that organisational decisions, practices and policies are fair and do not discriminate against any protected group. They were introduced to help organisations meet the public sector duty under the Equality Act 2010. Under the act, public sector organisations, or those in the third sector who work with the public, must show due regard to;
- Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Act.
- Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
- Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
