The plastic surgery department provides a range of general and specialist surgery.
Skin cancer
We perform Rapid Access skin cancer clinics jointly with the Dermatology Department for patients where there is a suspicion of skin cancer. Minor surgery is performed on two sites, Corbett Hospital and Russells Hall Hospital. Major surgery is only performed at Russells Hall Hospital.
We perform excisions of skin cancer as well as reconstruction. We also specialise in sentinel lymph node biopsy for melanoma and lymph node clearance.
Paediatric Hypospadias
Hypospadias occurs in about 1 in 300 live male births and comprises a hooded foreskin, abnormal position of the hole at the end of the penis and sometimes a bend in the penis. The aim of surgery is to restore the normal function and appearance of the penis. This specialist surgery is provided by one of our consultants, Mr Simon Wharton. It is usually carried out after the child’s first birthday and involves an overnight stay in hospital. Mr Wharton is renowned for conducting this procedure and receives referrals for complex revisions from across the country. He is consulted by other specialists to conduct these surgeries. The provision of this service means that patients from The Black Country, Shropshire and Worcestershire can be treated closer to home rather than having to travel into central Birmingham.
Fat Transfer to the Sole of the Foot
Dudley Group is one of only a handful of Trusts in the country to provide surgery to transfer fat to the sole of the feet for pain relief. In instances where the fat in the sole of the foot breaks down and becomes very thin, it is possible to inject fat from another part of the body to relieve the pain.
